Winston-Salem and the rest of North Carolina is heating up, but that doesn’t mean you have to slow down! There are tons of exciting upcoming events and things-to-do that will help you beat the heat.  Read on to find our recommended upcoming events and activities in Winston-Salem.

Texas Pete Twin City RIBFEST

When: June 9th-12th (11:00am-11:30pm 9th-11th; 11:00am-7:00pm on the 12th)

Where: Dixie Classic Fairgrounds

What: A four-day national BBQ and music festival featuring BBQ teams from across our great land. This event also has thematic music days with two stages.

Why We Like It: What’s not to like!? It’s only $7 to get in, and parking is FREE. Grab your tickets early and hit the festival on Saturday, when the most stuff is going on. Pick a favorite competitor to root on and enjoy the fierce competition between contestants in both the professional division or the largest-ever amateur division. You can’t sample the competition’s ribs, but if you’ve built-up an appetite there will be plenty of food available from a HUGE variety of vendors. Professional pit-masters will be offering ribs, brisket, chicken, pork, and turkey. Additionally, there will be lots of other great shopping from local vendors selling their wares. If you’ve got kids there will rides and games for them to enjoy. Or you can dance the day away to the live musical entertainment that will be offered throughout the festival! From what we’ve heard, it’s like a smaller version of the fair (with, dare we say it, BETTER food?). So why not get your warm-up in for next fall’s Dixie Classic Fair.

Winston-Salem DASH vs. Wilmington Blue Rocks

When: June 10th and 11th at 7:00PM

Where: BB&T Field

What: Hometown team Winston-Salem Dash take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks in ‘America’s Sport’.

Why We Like It: School’s finally out for most of Forsyth county’s schools, and that means it’s time to celebrate! What better way to spend a pleasant summer night than at the ballpark watching America’s favorite past time? If you’re not a huge fan of baseball, there is other entertainment offered too! The Friday night game will be offering a post-game fireworks show that is sure to be fantastic. Or catch the game Saturday (after Ribfest) for a glimpse of the “world-famous” & hilarious Zooperstars.

Visit Bowman Gray Stadium for the Craftsman Stadium Stock 50

When: June 11th from 8pm-11pm

What: Enjoy multiple exciting races on the flat, quarter-mile track at Bowmany Gray stadium. The main event is a 40 lap Stadium Stock race that will be sure to thrill!

Why We Like It: If you’ve never been to Bowman Gray, it is a great place to catch a race. Get there early to catch the earlier races (there are 6 total!). They aren’t always as heralded, but tensions are usually high–fueled by driver rivalries,  dizzying crashes, and high speed action. Some of Nascar’s earliest heroes learned the sport on this track, and the level of competition hasn’t dropped off since!  If you’re buying tickets at the gate, be sure to bring cash. Credit/Debit cards aren’t accepted at Bowman Gray.

Star Wars Day at the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem

Children's Musuem of W-S Logo

When: June 12th, 2011, 1:00pm-5:00pm

What: The Children’s Musuem of Winston-Salem is sponsoring Star Wars Day! Join them in a galaxy not so far away for an exciting day! Complete a Jedi Training Course. Meet interesting characters from the Star Wars universe! Enjoy a storytime, practice your lightsaber skills and BIG BANG BOOM will play a special rock concert at 2 p.m.

Why We Like It: Jedi Training!? Hmmm… Jedi persuasion could be useful in convincing Buyers that now is the time to buy! This looks like a great event for children of all ages. If your kids aren’t familiar with Star Wars this is a great chance to introduce them to this scintillating fantasy world created by George Lucas. What kid is going to say no to practicing lightsaber skills? Bring the camera, because there are sure to be plenty of memories made! We’ve never heard of BIG BANG BOOM, but it’s a pretty sure bet they’ll be very entertaining. This event is cheap, too! It costs $10 for non-museum-members and $8 for museum-members.
